HUNTSVILLE, AL - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama said Friday it will continue paying the full cost of three cancer drugs, including a life-saving breast cancer medication, despite reports it would cut reimbursements to below the drugs' market price.

Paying less than market value would have meant doctors lost money every time they administered Avastin, Rituxan and Herceptin, the three drugs in question, which women's health advocates say would have meant less access to the medications statewide.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- General Electric says its healthcare unit will buy diagnostics company Clarient in a deal to speed its expansion into cancer diagnostic and therapy selection tools.

The company says the deal values Clarient, which is an associate company at Huntsville's HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, at $580 million net of cash and investments.

HUNTSVILLE, AL - America faces a growing biological threat from rogue nations and terrorists, a leading biologist told Huntsville's first biodefense symposium Tuesday night.

Under the right circumstances, tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands could die in a biological attack, said Dr. Jerry Jaax of Kansas State University

"There's a reason for all of this," Jaax said of the symposium.

School special-needs program trains ‘work force ready’ students

The activity was part of Charlene Sandford’s delayed development class study of cells.

The Partnership for Biotechnology Research, along with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, will host the BioDefense Symposium on Oct. 19 and 20, 2010.  The symposium will take place at the Jackson Conference Center, adjacent to HudsonAlpha on the Cummings Research Park Biotechnology Campus and will be preceded by the PBR Scholarship Fund Benefit Golf Tournament, to be held Oct. 18 through 20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.  Symposium attendees will range from academics, scientists and business development professionals to private and government personnel in the biodefense and defense industries.
